March 22: Play Ball!

I joined the City of Brotherly Love Softball League. Last week I got together with a few of my friends to throw the ball around and take some batting practice. My left forearm was sore for the next three days. Tonight was our first practice. Hopefully I can walk tomorrow.

There are a couple of companies in the city that offer horse drawn carriage tours through the historic district. I cannot imagine that it is a very pleasant experience for the horses to be trotting down crowded city streets on summer days, in ninety degree heat, ninety percent humidity. It is for this reason that I began to shoot dirty looks to the tourist who patronize these companies. Honestly, I don't understand why they can't just walk.

One of the stables is located on a street which I used to travel on my way to work in the morning. I had to change my route because I always got stuck at the light and had to see the horses being brought out and geared up for the day. It made me sad.

If I ever win the lottery I am going to buy every carriage company in the city and free all of the horses.

March 19: Hyperhidrosis

Hyperhidrosis is the condition characterized by abnormally increased perspiration, in excess of that required for regulation of body temperature.

I am not ashamed to admit that I sweat excessively. It wasn't always this way. Only recently have I found myself sweating at inappropriate times, like while sitting at my desk doing absolutely nothing. I decided to up the ante and purchase prescription strength Dove anti-perspirant. For seven dollars, I figured it must have some magical properties that would remedy the situation. It was money well spent. Tonight was a good night.

His name is Renaldo. You will be seeing more of him in the future.

Children and adults have enjoyed Sock Monkeys for over a 100 years. The original crafter who created this lasting icon is unknown, but the creativity behind this wonderful doll has brought joy to millions.

The iconic sock monkeys made from Red-Heel socks emerged at the earliest in 1932, the year the Nelson Knitting Company of Rockford, Illinois added the trademarked red heel to its product. In the early years, the red heeled sock was marketed as "De-Tec-Tip". Nelson Knitting was an innovator in the mass market work sock field, creating a loom that enabled socks to be manufactured without seams in the heel. These seamless work socks were so popular that the field was soon flooded with imitators, and socks of this type were known under the generic slang term "Rockfords". Nelson Knitting added the red heel "de-tec-tip" to assure its customers they were buying "original Rockfords". This red heel gave the monkeys their distinctive mouth.

March 17: Row, Row, Row Your Boat

I devoted five years of my life to the St. Joseph's University crew team. Some of my fondest college memories came from that experience, but when I rowed my last race I was done. I haven't been in a boat since.
