Sometimes we learn things the hard way. I felt obliged to share this knowledge in an attempt to prevent others from making a similar mistake.

I suspect that you dropped a personal item into the blue water? That nearly happened to me in Maryland on a ride.
I had to take my cycling shirt off to get my bibs off, and had forgotten to empty the pockets. When I pulled the shirt over my head all sorts of things (including my keys) dropped out and landed on the sides, narrowly missing the murky blue water.
Lesson learned indeed.
